Immigration
Dilemma: Genre Analysis of a
You-Tube video and aPersuading
Cartoon
There
have been over 10 million undocumented Immigrants who have entered the United
States illegally since 2009. Illegal immigration is the act of
migrating to a country or state violating their laws regarding immigration and
sovereignty. This dilemma raises
many questions that need to be solved.
Questions like, “What are plausible solutions to illegal immigration in
America?” And“What can be done to
prevent illegal immigration in the future?” Although, these questions may seem
simple and straight forward there solutions are far more intricate than that and
are reflected in news articles, websites, political
cartoons.
These sources, or genres, depending on how the information is displayed
are meant to influence their audience to feel a certain way about a subject.
Things like: the use of color, form of structure, and credibility all determine
how well the message is presented to the audience.
The You-Tube video “Pro-Immigration PSA” by miglification and the
persuading cartoon “Alien Tsunami” by Adam DiOrio and published by CNSnews.com
is both two different forms of genres, that have different information about the
topics. To find what genre was
better at persuading the audience, they must be analyzed looking at their
structure, style, language, use of color and music, and rhetoric.
Purpose and Audience
The persuading cartoon “Alien Tsunami” by Adam DioOrio is
intended for citizens of The United States who are concerned with the issue of
illegal immigration. It is
available online on the website cnsnews.com, which makes it limited to an
audience who has access to the internet . The intended audience is most likely well aware of the
controversial issue regarding illegal immigration in America and is attempting
to illustrate how over whelming illegal immigration has been to the United
States taking the viewer 2 to 3 minutes to capture all the information being
displayed.
The You-Tube video “Pro Immigration PSA” by miglification also provides
information about illegal immigration trying to persuade a similar audience as the cartoon. The information
being communicated however is entirely different in comparison to the persuading
cartoon. Although You-Tube is also limited to people having access to the
internet, it is much more popular than cnsnews.net taking the viewer approximately three minutes to view the entire
video.
Rhetorical Issues: Ethos, Pathos,
Logos
The persuading cartoon “Alien Tsunami” is effective at providing ethos
because of the credibility of the publisher. The website cnsnews.net has established
itself as a trustworthy and reliable website providing its viewers with news
and informatio. The cartoon portrays the Statue of Liberty, one of the most
recognized symbols The United States representing hope for many immigrants, with
a facial expression that is concerned and scared as a menacing Tsunami labeled
“3 MILLION ILLEGAL ALIENS PER YEAR” is about to destroy it.
The statue of liberty also has text that as she is talking, is changing
her mind and is becoming more hesitant as the tsunami approaches until she
finally says “Holy &$%#!!”. After looking at the cartoon, the
audience will believe that illegal immigration is going to destroy The United
States.
The You-Tube video “Pro-Immigration PSA” by miglification is successful
in using ethos by quoting celebrated individuals who were known as honorable and
reliable like Franklin D. Roosevelt, John F. Kennedy, and Tony Blair. The video also uses snippets of
broadcasts of several news programs, showing people who were for illegal
immigrants. The video generates a
strong sense of emotion that is sad and sympathetic to the audience by showing
the pictures of children who are sad because their parents were getting deported
to Mexico. There is an image
displayed for several seconds of a little boy about 5 years old holding a sign
that says “Please do not deport my parents”. That image in particular will most
likely influence individuals who children have because they would not want that
to happen to them for the sake of their own children.[WU6]
Structure
The
persuading cartoon,“Alien Tsunami” is made up of one segment depicting a scene
with the Statue of Liberty in the ocean with a tsunami heading towards it. Because of its structural limitation
the cartoonist is unable to display a large amount of information, making him
have to divide the space available for the text and drawing.
However,
the cartoonist did a great job in making the cartoon self-explanatory by using
simple “everyday” words. It is successful
in giving the message that illegal immigration is a big problem.
In contrast, the You-Tube video “Pro-immigration PSA” is able to display
much more information to its audience.
Although the video has a time limit, since it was uploaded through
You-Tube, the producer is still able to communicate its point effectively. However, the video is not structured
very well. It has a very vague
introduction with not enough detail followed by snippets of images and videos
that do not seem to follow a certain pattern making the video challenging to
follow.[WU8]
Style and Language
The
text language of the persuading cartoon is
informal and in a way crude.
The cartoonist did this to make the cartoon amusing to the reader but at
the cost of credibility, the style and way it was written makes it hard to take
seriously. The colors used were
primarily neutral without much variety in color. The text throughout the cartoon
is similar with the exception of the emphasized tsunami, labeled, to represent
the “3 MILLION ILLEGAL ALIENS PER YEAR”.
The language used in the You-Tube video “Pro-immigration PSA” is
expressed through both the use of text and voice.
The spoken voice is soft
and subtle, giving the viewer a feeling of hope. However, the video used music playing
in the background that at times seemed to conflict with the persons.
The text used was mostly for quotes, they were easy to understand and
very legible. Throughout the video
the language used was simple and basic. This was done to
grasp the audience, giving the video a larger audience base.
Conclusion
After carefully analyzing both genres, the persuading cartoon
“Alien Tsunami” and You-Tube video “Pro-immigration PSA”, the video was more
effective in delivering information about illegal immigration.
The credibility of the cartoon could not be taken seriously because of
the style and way it was written, although amusing it lacked ethos.
They were both similar in regards to the amount of individuals they could
reach since both were available online.
In addition, the video is much more appealing to the audience’s emotions
making it more effective in persuading the
viewer.
